Youth Peace and Unity Workshop 2020


KUALA LUMPUR, 21 December 2020 - The Malaysian Youth Council, UCSI Group SDG Secretariat Office, Centre for Peace and Unity Education and the Ministry of National Unity organised the Youth, Peace and Unity Workshop on 19 to 20 December 2020 at Le Quadri Hotel. A total of 40 youths took part in the event.

The main focus was to cultivate a spirit of togetherness among the multi-racial community especially among the younger generation. This workshop was in line with the goals of UCSI Group as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and Goal 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Present at the event on the first day were Founder and CEO of UCSI Group Dato’ Peter Ng, who gave the welcoming speech; Department of Unity and National Integration of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Deputy Director Zulkhairi Zainal, who officiated the workshop; Malaysian Youth Council President Lim Swee Bok Vice; and Malaysian Youth Council Deputy President, Ahmad Shah Mohamad Salleh.

On the second day, UCSI Group SDG Secretariat Office Executive Director Norani Abu Bakar shared on SDG roles and how they relate to unity. The presentation included planning collaboration projects by the SDG Secretariat Office and the Department of National Unity for climate action for peace. Norani also presented the book “Introduction to Peace and Unity in Diversity” to the director and discussed the launching of the Sekretariat Rukun Negara and Kelab Rukun Negara at UCSI Schools. These are the first private schools in Malaysia to launch these associations. Along with the workshop, the Youth for Unity committee mobilised by the Malaysian Youth Council was also established to inspire the spirit of unity among the younger generation. The closing ceremony was officiated by Department of National Unity and National Integration (JPNIN) Director General, Datuk Hisamuddin Mohd Sujak.

On the last day of the workshop, Anak Borneo Semenanjung was also invited for the Borneo Culture Exhibition.  The exhibition featured interesting activities such as a traditional costume exhibition, traditional music, food and handicrafts from Borneo.

Special appreciation was given to the Malaysian Youth Council for raising funds to support UCSI’s ‘Leave No One Behind Education Project’ – an internship and apprenticeship programme for refugees. The aim is to provide skills, knowledge and training to youth from various backgrounds. Congratulations to Malaysian Youth Council, UCSI Group SDG Secretariat Office, the Centre for Peace and Unity Education and the Ministry of National Unity for successfully organising this workshop for youth.
