Virtual Eco-Schools Award Ceremony

In conjunction with Celebrating 10 Years of Eco-Schools in Malaysia, the WWF-Malaysia organized a virtual Eco-Schools Award Ceremony and our school, UCSI International School Springhill has been invited to join the ceremony. The event is to celebrate award recipients from 2020-2021 since WWF has not been able to organise physical events due to the global pandemic and lockdowns.

As the Eco-School Coordinator, Kumutha Chelliah had given an appreciation speech as UIS Springhill has won the Silver Award last year. The campus was officially registered as an Eco-School under WWF Malaysia in the year 2017. The school community is encouraged to be caring individuals who “think globally but act locally” to enhance sustainability practices. With this in mind, the school has conducted various school events such as Earth Day, Port Dickson beach clean-up, Service Day, and implementation of other sustainability practices in school including integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Eco-themes in lessons across the IB Programmes. In addition, with a recent collaboration with the UCSI Group SDG Secretariat Office under Ms. Norani, various awareness and engagement events have been organised, such as World Soil Day (WSD), World Environment Day (WED), Peace and Unity virtual gathering and SDG awareness quizzes for staff and teens.

It was equally jubilant for her sister school, Sri UCSI Springhill to have received the Bronze Award. Sri UCSI Springhill witnessed her own closure and the subsequent online classes due to the Covid 19 lockdowns and restrictions. Nonetheless, by using the means provided by online platforms such as Microsoft Teams, the school managed to submit to the criteria laid out in the seven steps. The school further took the opportunity to apply the seven steps during a short tenure of physical school before online classes were once again resumed. Despite these tumultuous periods, Sri UCSI Springhill achieved the Bronze Award thanks to the tireless efforts of an excellent team of teachers and students overseen by Jonathan Anthony, the chairman of Sri UCSI’s Eco school committee.

This recognition marks a huge milestone for both schools. This achievement will not be possible without the support of our school's management team, commitment and dedication of our past and present Eco-School committee members, teachers and support staff, involvement of students in the school activities and continuous support from parents. This national event was launched by Ms Sophia Lim as the CEO of WWF-Malaysia and witnessed by Mr Pramod Sharma as the Eco-Schools Global Senior Director of Education. The event was recorded live on the WWF-Malaysia Facebook page. It will indeed leave an indelible mark of joy and inspiration for both schools.
