KUALA LUMPUR – UCSI College and Murdoch University have teamed up to meet the ever-growing demand for cybersecurity solutions.
Both parties have signed an MoA that will see UCSI College launching the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) in Cybersecurity and Forensics - a 3+0 programme runs in collaboration with Murdoch.
The effort could not be more timely. The estimated cost of global cybercrime is expected to increase by $5.7tril between 2023 and 2028 – a 70% increase.
In Malaysia alone, over 20,000 cybercrimes were reported in 2021, incurring losses of over RM560mil. Malaysians have also suffered RM2.23bil losses to cybercrimes from 2017 to July 2021.
“The need for skilled cybersecurity personnel has never been greater,” said Assoc Prof Dr Mabel Tan Hwee Joo, President and CEO of UCSI College.
“UCSI and Murdoch are committed to nurture the talent that will take on the most challenging cyber threats of our time and secure the digital frontier.”
She added that students will not only gain technical skills but valuable global networks and cross-cultural experiences from this programme, which will help them develop a global worldview.
Murdoch’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Transnational Education), Prof Peter Waring said that the partnership would enhance the pool of high-level cybersecurity personnel in Malaysia.
“Apart from impacting the industry, we hope to strengthen the hub of transnational education in Malaysia and continuously nurture high-level graduates,” he said after the MoA signing ceremony at Le Quadri Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
“In the case of transnational education, we want to make sure that whoever we work with has high quality. And we find that with UCSI - our shared values are aligned.”
Prof David Parry, Dean of Murdoch’s School of IT also said that Murdoch’s IT programme is catered to produce future-ready cyber-expertise professionals who can tackle real-world challenges.
